“Star Tours World to Help Children”

The Age – Aug. 15, 1956

NEW YORK, August 14 – Film comedian Danny Kaye, now ambassador-at-large for the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund, returned yesterday after a 32,000-mile world tour.

He collected material during the tour for another film to supplement his first film for the fund—Assignment Children.

Mr. Kaye said he considered that his work for underprivileged children was the most worthwhile of his career.

He supplied interviewers with plenty of laughs about his tour.

“I have always wanted to find out the truth about Turkish coffee,” he said.

“Now I know. It is unique.

“I was drinking some while writing a letter home when my pen ran dry.

“I dipped my pen in the coffee and continued the letter. It worked beautifully.

“On another occasion, I conducted the Israeli Symphony Orchestra.

“The faces of the musicians would have been something to film.

“Such emotion, such despair, disbelief, awe and contempt.

“However, despite the conductor, who they ignored, the orchestra played wonderfully well.”

Mr. Kaye visited England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Israel, Spain, Morocco and Nigeria.
