“Weary Danny Kaye Pals With Chimp”

The Spokesman-Review – Aug. 17, 1957

HOLLYWOOD – A weary Danny Kaye was ready to face movie cameras at MGM this week—after what may go down as the strangest type of rehearsals a screen star ever did to prepare for a movie role.

Over the last three weeks Danny has done little but get acquainted with a trained chimpanzee named Candy, who is to appear with him in a large number of scenes in “Merry Andrew.” They ate together, slept in the same room, practiced baseball batting and throwing, rode a bike tandem, played chess, and dug side by side with shovels. Danny, in the film, portrays an archeologist who joins a circus and adopts the monk.
