“Danny Was Drenched—But Show Went On”

Evening Times – Aug. 17, 1961

“You’re the most delightful bunch of idiots I’ve ever seen,” Danny Kaye told his audience at the recent show in Washington – and they loved him for it.

For 2000 people sat in drenching rain to hear Danny—also soaked—give them three hours of songs, mime, and stories.

His pianist, Sammy Prager, stuck his hands under the tarpaulin which protected the piano from the rain at the outdoor show.

Then The Rain . . .

When rain threatened at the start of the show Danny cut most of the supporting acts and played for 90 minutes until the interval.

Then the rain began, and though 1000 people left, 2000 stayed to watch him do another hour and a half.

“Even if I were going to melt in this rain, I would stay out here as long as you are willing to listen to me,” he told the audience. When the show was stopped, an hour over time, the rain ended.
