SEATTLE – In the past, entertainer Danny Kaye says he shied away from owning a baseball team but now he says he would be “delighted to be involved” in major-league baseball here.

Kaye, passing through Seattle on a UNICEF tour, met with a business associate, Seattle radio executive, Lester M. Smith.

Kaye-Smith Enterprises, which own several radio stations, is trying to get a major-league franchise for Seattle. Smith talked last week with baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn about financing a team.

His group, Kaye said stands a pretty good chance of getting prime consideration to acquire a franchise.

“I think the Northwest is a great area for this kind of venture,” Kaye said. “I think it has become one of the leading parts of the country in the promotion of national sports.

“For baseball not to be represented, I think is remiss on the part of baseball.

“I think Seattle is a great town. It just keeps growing. I think baseball here would be terrific.

“I don’t think I’d be interested for one second if the team had to play outdoors, but with the dome it’s entirely different.”
